Movie Review: Tropic Thunder

Robert Downey Jr. AFTER

Without a doubt, it is doubtless that anyone has not heard of Tropic Thunder. For a few weeks, it has been the number one movie in the world. It has made a ton of money and will probably make a lot more.

I have never been a fan of war movies, so this one was hard to watch, at times. There is a lot of blood, a lot of guns, a lot of rifles and a lot of blowing things up with missiles and dynamite. Very loud and very graphic in its portrayal of war and soldiers in the military.

The movie is unique in that the movie is actually about the making of a movie. No, I am not making that up. The actors in the movie are playing actors who are playing soldiers in a pretend movie. My reaction to this…Wow. I think this might be the first time that anyone has ever attempted such a cinematic feat. This is pretty amazing because, if you think about it, everyone is having to act twice as hard as they normally would. It’s the equivalent of making two movies, basically.

Tropic Thunder tells the story of a movie set where the actors and the director don’t get along, at all. So, the man that wrote the book that the movie is actually based on (yes, this was a true story!) makes plans to have the actors dropped off in a Japanese country where a real war is being fought and film them like a reality television show. The rest of the movie is about the actors trying to get out of the war country and one of the actors who thinks it is a movie, so he plays along with the enemy soldiers because he thinks they’re actors.

I was able to walk away with a little insight into Hollywood because of this movie, though. I had no idea how few black actors there were in the world. In Tropic Thunder, there are two roles for black actors and only one of them is actually played by a black actor. Robert Downey Jr., of the movie Ironman, has to pretend to be black because not enough black people tried out for the movie. So, I really think Hollywood should open acting schools so black people can attend and they can fill the roles that need black people. That’s just my opinion, though.

Tropic Thunder did have its moments, but I also found it kind of insensitive in a lot of ways. Obese people might not want to watch this movie because the number of times Jack Black is called fat was way too many. Oh, and then they made him only wear his underwear in order to get, in my opinion, cheap laughs. He probably didn’t even know they were making fun of him. Also, if you get to the movie on time to see the previews, you’ll see a preview for another Jack Black movie and it looks really bad. It’s a sequel to a movie that came out recently (I admit, though, I never actually saw it) about a family of really obese people. I don’t understand why Jack Black would do parts like that. He is way more talented than just being fat. Ben Stiller needs to realize that obese people are not obese by choice, it is a disease and, for many, it is a disability. Making fun of them only creates a lack of respect by non-obese people of actual obese people who deserve to be treated like they were normal. It is the same as making fun of people with cancer or without eyeballs, it is childish, immature and juvenile and doesn’t need to be in a movie.

Also, I think it might be especially hard for anyone who knows anyone who is among the soldiers fighting overseas in the oil countries. Watching Tropic Thunder, these viewers might begin to worry about their friend or loved one or relative getting their arms blown off or stepping on an old gold mine, so they should reconsider watching this and maybe watch another movie, instead.

Note- If you love animals and love polar bears, DO NOT see this movie!!!!

In short, I think Tropic Thunder could have been funny, but it just became mean-spirited. In my opinion, Jack Black deserves an apology from all of the people on this movie.

I give Tropic Thunder 2 out of 5 winks.

You must be a fat chick to be so defensive of fat jokes. What are you? Deuce? Deuce and a half?

  2. David Levy Says:

    Hi Valerie

Tell you what – i’ll email you my thoughts…

  3. jason gross Says:

that was the most horrible review i have ever read.

  4. Gk Says:

First of all, there are movies which are about movies being made. You really want to see something similar, and more mind-bending, rent Adaptation. Secondly, I don’t think this movie would only INITIATE people into fearing their loved ones would be killed in wars. Trust me, it’s a fear they have from the very beginning. Want to see a real war movie, see Saving Private Ryan or Platoon. This is more a comedy, than a war film.

  5. mr. mdsfno Says:

japanese coutry??? Ive thought it was in vietnam and it is a comedy not a real war movie

  6. dfnjsdnj Says:

  8. wtf Says:

Without a doubt, it is doubtless that you are the worst writor in the history of the ineternet.

    Val,

If you like seeing the behind the scenes production work of movie and TV I have a few recommendations for you. The Movie State and Main, with William H. Macy is a pretty accurate depiction of what it is like behind the scenes of a movie set. Also for TV there is a older TV program called Sports Night, I highly recommend that, it really has very little to do with sports, and really does show what working in a TV studio producing a daily live TV program is all about. Both have good actors and great characters that you can really like.

I haven’t seen Tropic Thunder yet, and after reading your review I am pretty sure that it can wait for DVD. Thank you for review.

  10. David Levy Says:

I second the ‘State and Main’ comment.

    Val,
I am sorry it has taken so long, I’ve been exceptionally busy, sadly.

Just reading your new review, I would suggest just a little more research – obviously, research can be endless, but more facts would help – and a little more proof reading. If you submitted this for professional publication, they would get as far as the first line where you say ”Without a doubt, it is doubtless” and probably not read any further.

That isn’t to say the review is a total loss. You still have good use of language, and with a little practice/polish, you could develop into a very good writer. I look forward to the next one

  11. Gavin Perry Henthorn Says:

I am going with most of everyone on here. This is a comedy, it is in vietnam, Robert Downey, Jr. was casted for the plot of a comedy and not that there isn’t enough black actors and that there needs to be a school for them, saying that is quite racist, there are countless movies throughout our history that involves a movie inside a movie or something similar, it is called meta fiction, you should know this being a “movie critic”, I am not going to comment on the grammar since I don’t have any either, and you sound like you are fifteen years old with a kentucky education (I can say that since I do have one). This is an embarassment.

  12. Martin Says:

    Val,

That was the worst piece of writing I have ever read. There is nothing in that review that could be used to prove otherwise. My god that was terrible.

Grammar aside, there was no intelligence in it what so ever! Jack Black has a new movie where he plays an entire fat family that farts all the time?? That clearly flew over your head. You have to be a dumbass to think that trailer was real! That was part of Tropic Thunder! Those three trailers RIGHT BEFORE we see the scene of war are actually part of the movie showing the fictional actors Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr play. The trailer with Jack Black is a spoof on Eddie Murphy’s “The Klumps, while the one with Ben Stiller spoofs action movies and their sequals and the one with Robert Downey Jr playing a gay monk is a spoof on Brokeback Mountain and the Academy Award winning dramas.

You are a straight up tool! You aren’t even smart enough for this comedy, let alone review it. Its not even a smart subtle comedy! LOL

Do us all a favor and stop writing reviews. You don’t have what it takes to think or write so why would you think you could review?

  13. SarJo Says:

I think your right on all levels about this movie, Val. Ignore those dicks on this board.

Hey dicks! Why post if you dont have something worth saying?! Go watch Rambo for the 800th time!

  14. Gavin Perry Henthorn Says:

it’s just that she is incorrect. come on, you’re just saying this because you want to defend a satirical (or farce) movie blog/critic. I know it is farce. it’s just that I don’t find it funny. don’t worry, I won’t come back. but seriously, she isn’t correct. you know that that is owen wilson’s picture and not robert downey, jr. you know that this is a comedy, therefore the cast of robert downey is funny for the black man. you know this so why defend. you should just say something like “let off, she is just making a satire”. lets be adult here. no bad language when it’s not neccessary.

  15. Alan Says:

I don’t understand why some of you are being so critical of a critic? A critics job is to give an opinion. If you don’t agree, then go write your own review and leave it at that.
There is some bitter dudes on here.

  16. sponzo Says:

    I dont like rambo!!!!!

  17. Fans Says:

Another good article, sweetheart. Your father said he might see it if he has time, but this doesn’t sound like the sort of movie I would much enjoy.

    Keep up the review!

  18. wo Says:

you see, the thing is, Alan..is that yeah it’s okay to give an opinion of a movie..but when it’s so glaringly wrong in so many ways, well that’s just a problem. I’ve been a film reviewer for about five years now, and this has got to be really the worst piece I’ve read (and I read snippets of reviews from many budding film reviewers as part of my job; about 10 a day for the last six months). You need a whole lot more practice. RESEARCH the films better. Wikipedia can give you a lot of insight into upcoming movies and films being shown right now. Yahoo Movies as well. Use these sites productively. I mean, you actually incorrectly identified the genre of Tropic Thunder as a war film. It’s a comedy/satire.

Now, here’s the thing…I don’t know if this Valerie person is actually making a satire of film reviews here, but if so, it doesn’t work. So if she’s just doing this to have fun, she’s failing and if she’s doing this for real, well that’s just worse.

  19. wo Says:

I rank all my reviews out of a possible 20 points. My rank for you as follows:

    Grammar: 2/5
    Consistency and/or Structure: 1/5
    Accuracy: 0/5
    Developments: 0/5

That’s a 3/20. You would have never be considered for our company. This was fun. I’ll grade all your reviews from now on.

  20. Pyro T Says:

Well, after seeing those opening pictures have to say bravo, you had me fooled into thinking these were serious reviews. Though have to say, this one wasn’t as funny as the others- some of your jokes are a bit of a stretch but maybe it would help if i saw it first.

PS. for the all the people defending her, you’re only making yourselves become the butt of the joke by taking her ‘intentionally bad’ review style and missing the ‘INTENTIONALLY BAD’ bit of it.

PPS. i’m assuming you’re playing the ‘parents’ role as well

  21. Zeonix Says:

    Best fake review blog ever.

  22. Deadcowporn Says:

Sheer brilliance. This is now my one-stop shop for current and informative movie reviews. Keep up the staggering genius.

  23. Anonymous Says:

Er, what is everyone on? These reviews are quite obviously tongue and cheek, therefore criticism is completely pointless.

  24. Jesus Says:

Dropped off in a Japanese country? Did anyone else know that Japan owns countries that aren’t….Japan. Learn something new everyday.

  25. Nish Says:

This is actually a really good blog, quite insightful too (I wonder how many other people picked up on the black actor thing). Its a shame not everyone quite understands the concept of tongue in cheek, thier angry and patronising comments clearly show that they have missed the point. Maybe if they missed the point of this blog, they’ve missed the point of all the films some claim to review. Maybe they just get thier opinions from other reviews…. JMTC.

  26. big papa smurf Says:

Um, I’ve just found this site, thanks to Vals post on RT about Dark Knight and I mustr say that this is some funny retarded shit, god damn I hope she reviews Apacolypse Now orhell Star Wars would be a good review for this gal.

  27. Anonymous Says:

Is it too much to ask to proof read your work before you publish something.. make some kind of sense.. or actually put some thought into it?? It’s not funny at all, even in a tongue in cheek kind of way. Just because you make a review is no reason the quality of writing should be this piss poor. Maybe do a few more drafts before you publish something?

  28. Jamil Says:

Just heard about your site. I think you’re AWESOME. Thank you. You really crack me up. I read a different article/review each morning this week as a little pick-me-up since I don’t drink coffee. You are great. Thanks again!

And people: sit back, read, and enjoy. This girl rocks!
