Movies That Should Be Remade Into Remakes
Never before in the decades Hollywood’s been around has there been such an exciting time as now. Think about it, even though movie ticket prices keep going up and up, movies keep having record-breaking premier weekends. I can’t even wrap my head around that! One of the reasons for this is Hollywood’s almost psychic-like sense of predicting. They can predict a successful trend before audiences even know about it. Like right after Batman Begins came out, people in Hollywood knew to start making a bunch of super hero movies because they were going to be popular. They were right! Or take trilogies, for example. Hollywood realized that audiences liked seeing the same characters come back again and again, especially if they were doing a lot of the same stuff from the first movie, so Hollywood started making trilogies to everything: Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants had one, Iron Man DVD’s getting one, Pirates of the Caribbean even had two and so on, etc. Once again, they were right! So, I started watching closely and noticed a new trend that is going to be huge: remakes.
I’ve been taking a film appreciation class and my professor, Coach Addalay, has shown us a lot of movies from older days. The thing was, I think that most of the students were bored because it’s hard for today’s audiences to relate to old actors and storylines. So, I have put together a list of movies I think people in Hollywood (who can email me, if they like any of my ideas) should consider remaking because it’ll make it a better movie to watch.
Citizen Cane
We had to watch this supposedly best film ever in class and, OMG, I thought it would never end! Thank goodness for my iphone or I think I might’ve fallen asleep. Sledding? Old time clothes? Giant fireplaces? Newspapers? Everything about this movie was almost impossible to relate to, at all. My professor said that the movie was really controversial for its time because it was a biography of a powerful businessman. Key words in that sentence are ‘for its time’. So, let’s step it out of the 1920’s and step it up to the 2000’s.
Remade for today’s audiences, this would be a really controversial movie to do if someone made it about a powerful person of today that other people might be afraid to talk about. I think it would take someone like Ben Affleck to pull this off, he’s so powerful that he doesn’t have to worry about ruffling through some feathers. I think this would actually be a very successful movie if it was about someone relevant like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates or one of the popes. Can you imagine how mad they’d be?! “Get that movie out of my face!”
I already wanna see it!
Forest Gump
Everybody grew up watching this movie as a kid, but I watched it again recently and it definitely shows its age. Most of Forest’s life takes place the 1960’s and Vietnam, so it has a lot of historical people in it, and I think a lot of people have no idea who they are. Not only could this movie be updated to include people like President Obama and Gov. Schwarzenegger, but it would also be so amazing to see Forest Gump doing things we can all recognize, too. Imagine him being a finalist on American Idol (I can totally imagine where Forest tells Simon ‘Stupid is as stupid does’ and Simon would be speechless) or being the million-dollar winner on Lost, anything like that.
At first, it would seem natural to have Mr. Hanks’ real son, Colin, be the new Forest Gump, but I don’t think he’s famous enough, yet. Without a big name, not enough people might not go to see it and it’ll end up being an independent film or something. I really think this would be a good movie for Justin Timberlake. Justin would be so amazing because not only is he really handsome and a great dancer, but can bring the charisma and sex appeal that was missing from the original.
The one change I feel would have a profound effect is changing the ‘Life is like a box of…’ line from chocolate to fruit only because adult diabetes is really common nowadays and those people might find it difficult if chocolate is mentioned and fruit provides a healthier snack alternative.
Halloween
I just saw this at Halloween (I know, totally unoriginal, right?) and the only reason I’m suggesting it be remade is because Rob Zombie kind of creeps me out, so it ruins watching the special features.
Sixteen Candles
The 80’s are really popular, again, so anything 80’s related can and will be a huge success at the movies. Sixteen Candles would be just such that success. First, it’s one of the first movies to actually show teenagers with real problems, so updating some of those problems (i.e. cell phones, internet, abortion) would make it more believable. Second, it would be the greatest idea ever to actually set the movie in the 80’s (using all the old clothes and music and pop culture stuff) because that would be both hilarious and so cool. Can you imagine Lindsay Lohan as the lead girl, dressed in neon skirts and teased hair?!
Everyone loves renting 80’s movies, but how great would it be to see a new 80’s movie in the theaters, right?
Like, oh m’god, it’s, like, a no-brainer, Hollywood!
E.T.
I think I saw this on video when I was a kid, but I honestly don’t remember. I have seen scenes on Youtube and it’s just a movie that screams ‘Oh, please, please remake me!’
First, I want to say that I totally respect the original actors for doing this movie because it broke a lot of boundaries in sci-fi and had a lot of social undertones about civil rights and immigration and whatever. That said, the movie does suffer from bad special effects (they used puppets for the alien character). So, by remaking this, Hollywood could really take advantage of computers.
Today, CGI images are used in almost every movie from Transformers to even parts of Harry Potter. It has reached such a point that you can’t even tell if something is real or if they’re CGI effects (take the monkeys in the Indiana Jones movie with Shia, real or CGI images? I’m not gonna say…)
This would be a really big movie because by redoing the alien with today’s special effects, it would not only be more lifelike, but could have a way more interesting personality. Kind of like how Stitch was in Lilo and Stitch, but not exactly the same.
So, come on, Hollywood. Turn the pedals to the medal and get us some good movies to watch and review.
p.s. I want to send out a special thanks to Stefan, a fan who surprised me by making my new banner for me. Everyone should contact him because he’s really talented and does it for free.

These are all valid ideas, Val.
“Bill Gates, or Steve Jobs, or one of the Popes.”
Very nice.

Valerie, How about remaking BIRTH_OF_A_NATION? Since we Americans are already made, and the KKK is not so PC anymore, we could make it about Iraq. We could use those two groups, the Sunnies and the Sheets. Plus, this time it would have sound and we wouldn’t have to read those stupid cards in the middle of scenes. What do you think?

I couldn’t agree with you more, Val, about Citizen Kane. There is one criticism I would add, however,it’s in BLACK AND WHITE! Boring.

I am agreeing that all these film are good, it’s having good story, but I like “Forest Gump” a lot.
