Best Romantic Movie Couples of All Time
Summer is fast approaching and I, for one, am super excited. No matter where you live, summer means one thing: going to the beach. Some of my friends (hi, Dianne B!) actually go to the beach and surf, but I’m not that bold or that cool. I prefer to lie in the sun, read a book and watch for hot guys. Buy me an old-fashioned, but that’s what I call a fun time at the beach.
For many people, a summer watching-a-hot-guy-pass-by can turn into a summer romance. Summer romances are usually short, but as the French say about relationships, “Size doesn’t matter. It’s how you use it that counts.”
This got me thinking and since I’m all about movies, it got me thinking about movies. In shorts, I started thinking about romantic movies and began drawing up a list of my favorite on-screen movie couples of all time.
#4. Spider-Man 3 (2007)
Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst are my favorite super hero movie couple. The audience has seen their relationship grow throughout the different movies. It started with just a high school crush and now they are engaged. I’m hoping that in the fourth installment of the trilogy (just announced!) that there will be a wedding. Best thing of all is that they have really good chemistry.
The message this couple sends is one of remember to remember. Because even though Spider-Man has a lot of fighting to do, he always finds time to hang out with his girlfriend. I think a lot of couples end up not spending a lot of time together because they work too much or one of them is in school or jail. Tobey and Kirsten show us that if the guy takes a little time out to make a small effort, it can go a long way and the girl might end up marrying you because girls like attention.
#3 Step Up (2006)
If you don’t like to dance, you probably won’t like this or maybe you’re in a wheelchair. Step Up is probably one of the more original movies plots ever made. Mostly it is about Nora, who wants to get in to be a professional dancing person, and Tyler, a kind of thug guy who happens to be a really good dancer but is worried that attending a dance school might make him seem gay to his gang friends. Eventually, Nora and Tyler fall in love. The reason is because they have really good chemistry.
I picked this movie because, at first, these two people seem totally incompatible and you never, ever expect them to fall in love but they totally work really hard to make it work because they both like to dance. The message it gives is one of being open-minded. I think this movie takes a bold stance and says, “Hey, movie watchers, it doesn’t matter if two people went to different schools or his clothes are baggier than yours or even if the guy has a part-time job, all that matters is that you both have at least one thing in common.”
#2 Transformers (2007)
Whether you liked Transformers or not, you have to admit that the obvious chemistry between Shia and Megan Fox is so obvious. Although she’s super pretty, Megan Fox’s character seems hard for Shia to approach, at first. I mean, she’s got a tattoo and works on cars, so most guys wouldn’t approach her because they would assume she is gay, but she really isn’t. Shia’s character is such a nice guy, but bad girls don’t always like good guys, so it’s up to Shia and the robots to convince her that Shia’s a good catch (hel-lo! Can I get some obvious over here?).
I chose this movie because it shows that if a guy keeps trying, he can win over the girl, especially if he can prove he’s brave in an explosion scenario. Girls love a guy that keeps trying, even if they aren’t attracted to him, because eventually the guy might be cuter if they dress better or get a haircut. On the flipside, a girl might be totally into the guy because he had the nerve to talk to her when no one else does because they think she might be a lesbian.
#1 Twilight (2008)
No surprise that Twilight is number one, as it’s pretty much the favorite of every movie watcher I know. Sure, the main boy is a vampire and the girl isn’t, but they have amazing chemistry on screen. Most viewers probably didn’t catch it, but there is a symbolic moment at the beginning when Bella and Edward actually meet in chemistry class. It’s like fate was telling them, “Hey, you guys have chemistry together and have chemistry with one another.”
Bravo to the actors for being artistic with their film, but not boring artistic like a sub-title movie that you have to watch in your film appreciation class.
The best part about Bella and Edward as a couple is that, despite what the world tells them about what is right and what is wrong, they just really love each other and don’t care about what other people think. Also, it tells parents that relationships today are a lot more complex than they were when they were teenagers, but not to worry because, even though there are a lot of dangers in the world, the boyfriend can usually protect your daughter and she won’t get hurt (she might get a scratch or a cut, but she probably won’t end up dead) because he loves her and may or may not try to have sex with her, but there’s not much you can really do about that.
So, there you go. I hope these movie couples inspire you to go out and follow your heart.
I give all movie couples in love five out five winks.

Pretty good, Val. Pretty good. I only vomited when Twilight was number 1. Looking forward to your next review. Up perhaps? Casablanca? The Hangover? The Lizzie Maguire Movie? All great options.

You just made me realize that a favorite movie couple of mine, Jerry Lewis and Stella Stevens in “The Nutty Professor” (1963), also had chemistry bring them together. The Nutty Professor was, as it turned out, a Chemistry Professor!
Thanks for your insight, Val.

I agree with Anna. Romeo and Juliet are CLASSIC! Plus i cried when i watched the Titanic. Rose and Jack are a very memorable couple. And the notebook was amazing! Noah stayed with Ally the whole time, even though she didn’t know who he was. That’s love right there.
